    £1.3m for local communities… 5 September 2014

£1.3m of Carrier Bag Levy money for local communities: Durkan

    CF2014

Environment Minister Mark H Durkan has announced £1.3 million funding from the carrier bag levy for the NGO Challenge Fund 2015.

The announcement comes as the first set of official statistics report a staggering 215 million less single use bags in circulation since the introduction on 8 April 2013.

Minister Durkan said: “The fantastic response from shoppers and retailers to the carrier bag levy has led to a massive 72% decrease in ‘single use’ carrier bags.

The carrier bag levy is very much the people’s fund. Last year I ensured that the money from the levy went back into the community through environmental projects. I have visited many of these projects and have been most impressed by the level of partnership between NGOs, local interest groups and schools to deliver environmental excellence across Northern Ireland.”

Northern Ireland Environment Link (NIEL) administers the NGO Challenge Fund on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA).

Applications from eligible groups are invited to the NGO Challenge Fund and must be submitted to challengefund@nienvironmentlink.org by noon on Friday 3rd October 2014. Successful projects will be announced in late October/early November 2014.
